A REVIEW OF THE SCENES IN THE SORCERERS STONE BOOK VERSUS THE MOVIE
If you are reading this blog, then I assume you have either read or watched Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone.

OPENING SCENES
BOOK
The opening Chapter revolves around Mr. Dursley. His wife and son are described, as well as their connection to the Potters. Mr. Dursley drives to work and sees a bunch of odd things, like a cat reading a map and people dressed in cloaks, whispers about the Potters, and a man talking about “you-know-who” and “muggles”. Things he does not notice: owls flying around outside, shooting stars.
PART 1
BOOK
Dumbledore and McGonagall converse in the dark outside of the Dursley house and wait for Hagrid to bring Harry. Dumbledore fills McGonagall in on all the gossip and events of the day.
Hagrid brings Harry on a motorcycle that he borrowed from “a young Serious Black”.
MOVIE

PART 2
BOOK
It’s Dudley’s birthday. He doesn’t get all the presents that he wants, so he throws a temper tantrum and gets what he wants. The Dursleys, Dudley’s friend Piers Polkiss, and Harry go to the zoo. Comments about Harry’s hair always mysteriously go back to the same crazy mess, even when he cuts it. Harry talks to the snake, the glass disappears, the snake scares everyone, and Harry gets in trouble.

- NEXT SCENE: HARRY IS RUDELY WOKEN UP BY HIS AUNT AND COUSIN IN THE BROOM CUPBOARD UNDER THE STAIRS. IT IS DUDLEYS BIRTHDAY. HARRY IS BASICALLY TREATED LIKE THE HELP. DUDLEY IS SUPER SPOILED.

PART 3
BOOK
The letters. Harry and Dudley get new school uniforms. Harry gets the mail, one of them is for him. Dudley notices and screams, which gets is parents attention. Vernon takes the letter. Vernon and Petunia send the kids out and they conspire to keep Harry out of the loop. Harry moves into Dudley’s 2nd room. Every day, more and more letters come. Vernon is going crazy. Vernon decides to pack up and leave. They drive for hours and hours and stay in a hotel for the night (where a bunch of letters for Harry is delivered). They get on a boat and move into a tiny house on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean during a storm. Its Harry’s birthday.

BOOK
Hagrid’s big entrance. He scares everyone. Ties Vernon’s rifle into a knot and throws it away. Gives Harry a squished cake. Hagrid lights a fire and pulls a ton of stuff out of his coat ( “a copper kettle, a squashy package of sausages, a poker, a teapot, several chipped mugs, and a bottle of some amber liquid.” Hagrid realizes that the Dursleys didn’t tell Harry anything about who is. Hagrid yells a lot, then drops the W bomb and FINALLY gives Harry his letter. Hagrid pulls out more stuff from his coat – “an owl – a real, live, rather ruffled-looking owl – a long quill, and a roll of parchment.” The truth comes out – Petunia tells about her sister, Harry realizes they lie about everything, and Hagrid explains. The whole story about Voldemort comes out, what really happened to his parents, and how he got his scar and came to live with the Dursleys. Vernon insults Dumbledore, Hagrid gave him a pig’s tail. Hagrid tells Harry that he was expelled in his 3rd year
MOVIE
- THEY MOVED TO A TINY CASTLE ON A TINY ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN DURING A STORM…. IT’S HARRYS BIRTHDAY, AND HE MAKES A WISH, HAGRID BREAKS DOWN THE DOOR AND GIVES HARRY A CAKE FOR HIS 11TH BIRTHDAY
- THE TRUTH COMES OUT ABOUT HARRYS PARENTS. HAGRID DEFENDS LILLY AND JAMES POTTER, AND ALBUS DUMBLEDOR. HE USES HIS MAGIC, EVEN THOUGH HE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO.
PART 5
BOOK
Harry woke up in the middle-of-no-where cottage and thought he dreamt everything, but then he saw Hagrids coat and the owl delivering the paper. Hagrid slept on the sofa. They got up and left. They took the rowboat back to the mainland, then a train into London. Hagrid sat knitting on the train. They go into the Leaky Cauldron, where Harry meets a bunch of people. They go into Diagon alley, then Gringotts, then they split up. Harry meets Malfoy while getting his robes. Hagrid explains quidditch and the 4 houses. They get a white owl for harry. Harry meets Olivander and gets his wand. Harry and Hagrid leave Diagon Ally and head to London, where Harry gets on a train to go back to the Durselys

Harry stayed with the Dursleys for a whole month after his Diagon Ally adventure. They ignored him the whole time. Harry went to the train station and was very confused because there is no platform 9 ¾. The Weasleys come and Harry asks the for help. Harry got on the train and met the Weasley brothers. Ron and Harry sat together, they shared stories and are lots of candy. They met Hermione and almost started a fight with Malfoy and his crew. They get to Hogwarts on magical boats.

The first years get sorted into their houses after the hat sings a song. They eat lots of good food. Friends are made. They all sing the school song. They go to their dorms and sleep.

Harry lost 2 points for Gryffindor because Snape doesn’t like him. Harry and Ron meet Hagrid for tea. Harry reads the newspaper about Gringott’s break-in.

Flying lessons start soon. Everyone is either very excited or very nervous. Flying lessons. Neville accidentally flies away. Malfoy steals the rememberall and harry confronts him. Harry thinks he is in trouble but he becomes a seeker. Malfoy bullies Harry into a wizard’s duel. Harry and Ron sneak out to the duel, Hermione tries to stop them but gets locked out. They run into Neville sleeping on the floor in the hallways. They went to the trophy room for the duel but it was a trap for Filtch to find them. The four of them ran and hid, accidentally running into the 3 headed dogs. They ran away back to the common room.

Harry gets a broom from McGonigal during lunch. Harry gets a mini-instruction session with Oliver Wood on quidditch. Levitating in charms class. Ron hurts Hermione feelings. Halloween dinner is interrupted by a troll. Ron and Harry go to get Hermione. Ron and Harry fight a troll in the bathroom.

Quidditch season starts. Harry prepares for his first game by reading a book, which is taken by Snape. Harry tries to get his book back but learns that Snape got injured by trying to get past the 3 headed dogs. The Quidditch games begin. Harry’s broom gets jinxed, and Hermione makes Snape stop. Harry catches the golden snitch in his mouth. They all drink tea in Hagrids hut afterward. Hagrid spills a secret.

Hagrid moves a Christmas tree into Hogwarts. Malfoy insults Ron’s family, Ron attacks, snape see, 5 points taken from Gryffindor. They search for books about Nicholas Flammel. Everyone goes on break and Ron and Harry play chess, eat a lot, and open presents together. Harry got the invisibility cloak.
He went to the restricted section of the library but had to run away when Fitch came. Harry went into a strange room and found his family looking back at him in a mirror.
He brings Ron the next night, and Ron sees himself as the head boy and Quidditch captain. Harry goes alone on the 3rd night and finds Dumbledore there, getting an explanation about the Mirror of Erised.

- DUMBLEDORE FINDS HARRY IN THE ROOM WITH THE MIRROR AND GIVES ADVICE

PART 13
BOOK
Snape is going to referee the next Quidditch match. Neville is bullied by Malfoy with a leg-locking curse. The trio finally finds info about Nicholas Flammel and the Sorcerers Stone. Hermione and Ron have the plan to help Harry if Snape tries to hurt him during the game. Ron and Neville get into a fistfight with Malfoy Crabb and Goyle. Harry caught the snitch within 5 minutes of the game starting. Snape goes into the forbidden forest, and Harry follows and eavesdrops and the conversation with Quirrell.

- IN THE LIBRARY, HERMIONE DISCOVERS THAT FLUFFY IS PROTECTING THE SORCERER’S STONE
- THINK SNAPE IS TRYING TO STEAL THE STONE, BUT HAGRID CLARIFIES THAT HE IS ACTUALLY PROTECTING THE STONE. HAGRID SLIPS UP AND TELLS THE TRIO HOW TO GET PAST FLUFFY
PART 14
BOOK
The trio is studying in the library when Hagrid comes in. They meet at the Hut and learn more about the Sorcerer’s Stone and Hagrids new dragon egg. Norbert hatches and Malfoy sees through the window. Ron gets bitten and has to go to the hospital. Harry and Hermione got Norbet up to the tallest tower to give to Charlie’s friends. Malfoy got caught by McGonagall and got detention. Harry and Hermione were caught by Filtch.

PART 15
BOOK
Neville had also been caught out of bed at 1 am. 150 points were taken from Gryffindor, putting them in last place for the house cup. Neville, Harry, Hermione, and Malfoy have detention with Hagrid in the forbidden forest. Hagrid, Harry, and Hermione went one way and Malfoy, Neville, and Fang went the other way. They found 2 centaurs but they weren’t much help. They switched groups, Harry went with Fang and Malfoy. They found the dead unicorn, and Firenze saved Harry from the cloaked figure. The 3 centaurs got into an argument about intervening in fate. Firenze gave Harry a ride back to Hagrid and helps him learn the truth about Voldemort returning.
MOVIE
- ALL 4 KIDS GET INTO TROUBLE AND ARE SENT ON DETENTION IN THE FOREST
- HAGID TAKES THE KIDS INTO THE WOODS AND FINDS UNICORN BLOOD. HARRY SEES A FIGURE IN THE WOODS. THEY SPLIT UP.
- HARRY AND MALFORY FIND THE UNICORN BEING SUCKED ON BY THE HOOTED FIGURE. HARRYS SCAR HURTS. MALFORY AND FANG RUN AWAY. HARRY IS ALMOST ATTACKED BY THE HOODED FIGURE. FIRENZE SAVES HARRY.
PART 16
BOOK
Exams are finally over, and everyone can relax…. just kidding.
Harry’s scar keeps hurting, they go to get information about Fluffy from Hagrid, and they try to find Dumbledore, but he left, and McGonagall doesn’t believe them.
They try to trail Snape and watch the door, but it doesn’t work. They make a plan to get to the stone before Snape that night.
They get to Fluffy and put him to sleep with Harry’s flute.
They fall onto the Devil’s Snare and Hermione blasts bluebell fire at it, so it lets the boys go.
They got to the room of flying keys and worked together to find the one to fit the door.
They play chess, and Ron sacrifices himself.
Harry and Hermione get to the next room to find a toll unconscious.
The next room is potions, Hermione solved the riddle, and she went back through the purple flame to get Ron and send a message to Dumbledore.
Harry went through the black fire to the last room with the Stone.

- HARRY THINKS HE HAS DISCOVERED SOMETHING AND GOES TO QUESTION HAGID, HAGRID TELLS THEM HOW TO CALM FLUFFY
- TRIO TRIES TO GET MAGONIGAL TO HELP, BUT SHE BRUSHES THEM OFF. THEY RUN INTO SNAPE, WHO GIVES A WEIRD WARNING.
- THEY RUN INTO NEVEL WHILE SNEAKING OUT. HERMIONE CASTS A SPELL ON HIM WHEN HE IS JUST TRYING TO BE GOOD AND TOUGH.
- THE TRIO GOES TO FLUFFY, WHO IS ALREADY ASLEEP. THEY ASSUME SNAPE DID IT.
- FLUFFY WAKES UP, AND THEY FALL INTO A PIT OF DEVIL SNARE.
- HERMIONE GETS THEM OUT OF THE DEVILS SNARE
- THEY FIND THE ROOM OF FLYING KEYS, HARRY USES THE BROOM TO GET THE KEY
- WIZARDS CHESS. RON LEADS THIS MISSION. HE IS THE KNIGHT.
PART 17
BOOK
Quirrell is the evil villain! He binds Harry in robes and the truth comes out about everything. The mirror is there, and it shows Harry where the stone is in his pocket.
Voldemort is revealed in the back of Quirrell’s head.
Harry tries to run, but Quirrell attacks and burns where Harry touches him.
Harry passes out.
Harry wakes up in the infirmary with Dumbledore.
Harry asks lots of questions, Dumbledore answers most of them.
Ron and Hermione visit. Hagrid visits.
Harry goes to the end-of-the-year feast. Dumbledore gives out points and Gryffindor wins.
They all leave to go home for summer break.
Dudley picks up Harry at the train station and looks very unhappy about it.

- THE BIG REVEAL – QUIRL IS THE VILLAIN. ALL THE TRUTHS ARE LET OUT. DUMBLEDORE HID THE MIRROR IN THE ROOM THAT IS PROTECTING THE STONE.

- VOLDEMORTS GHOST LEAVES QUIRLS BODY AND TRIES TO GET AT HARRY ONE LAST TIME BEFORE DISAPPEARING. HARRY FAINTS WITH THE STONE IN HIS HAND
- WAKES UP IN THE INFIRMARY WITH A TON OF TREATS AROUND HIM. DUMBLEDORE VISITS AND EXPLAINS EVERYTHING. DUMBLEDORE AND NICKOLAS FLAMEL AGREED TO DESTROY THE STONE, EVEN THOUGH IT WILL END HIS LONG LIFE
- HARRY DISCOVERS THAT HIS MOTHER’S LOVE IS WHAT PROTECTS HIM
- END OF SCHOOL YEAR. DUMBLEDORE DISTRIBUTE POINTS. GRYFONDOR WINS.
SIMILAR? DIFFERENT?
Despite the MANY differences between the book and movie, all Pottermors can agree that this is an absolutly WONDERFUL story.
The adventure, the mystery, the magic, and the relatability of the characters makes this a great book and movie for all ages!
