DAUGHTER OF THE MOON GODDESS

REVIEW OF NEW BOOK "DAUGHTER OF THE MOON GODDESS"

DAUGHTER OF THE MOON GODDESS by Sue Lynn Tan was released in 2022 and it is considered an ADULT fantasy novel. Exploring and inspired by Chinese mythology, this new novel will fascinate readers!

P.S. A SECOND book is planned to be released soon! Yes, that’s right, this will be a duology called Celestial Kingdom!

Keep reading to see my thoughts on this incredible story!

SYNOPSIS:

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting duology that weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic, of loss and sacrifice—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

MY REVIEW:

OVERVIEW:

A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.

A few things you will find in the story:

  • Chinese mythology & legendary creatures
  • Fierce female warrior fighting for her family
  • A gentle prince & a ruthless soldier
  • Friends—Lovers—Enemies…

MY THOUGHTS:

This book has been featured all over bookstagram, booktok and every other book related platform out there. First, lets start with the cover, it is one of the most beautiful “regular edition” covers that I have seen. It is absolutely stunning! Yes, yes, we should not judge book by its cover, but let’s be real here for a moment, beautiful cover helps!

I was nervous before starting this book, because with such a hype, you get higher expectation, and I really did not want to be disappointed. I did a buddy read with my friend Melissa, just in case. If things go south, I will have a buddy to cry to.

I went into this read with pretty open mind, I avoided all the spoilers and did not read the synopsis. I wanted to be surprised.

FROM THE FIRST PAGES...

From the very first few pages of this book, I knew I already loved it. The book felt like a friend right away. The writing is beautiful, and it flows so easily, I got invested with the characters right away. Xingyin is such a lovely character, she is longing for friendship, adventure but the one most important thing for her is her family.

Don’t let the title fool you, this book is jammed packed with action, drama, romance, betrayal and all the good things. I though that this will be a serene book about self-discovery etc., but it had me at the edge of my seat and I could not put it down.

There were moments that I felt like I was getting a whiplash from all the different discoveries and plot twists and betrayals that we were getting. I think I went from loving to hating to loving a certain character like three times.

SUMMARY:

This was an epic story of Xingyin, daughter of the banished moon goddess, who will stop at nothing to free her mother from her eternal confinement.

If you love fantastical lore, magic, dragons, and magical clouds (! my new favorite form of transport! move over magic carpet), you should definitely read it.

The second book: “Heart of the Sun Warrior” s coming out in November 2022, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!
