ARTEMIS FOWL REVIEW

A LOOK INTO THE ARTEMIS FOWL WORLD

BOY GENIOUS/ CRIMINAL

This Artemis Fowl review will delve into the book by Eoin Colfer – an epic adventure series about a young boy genius. One who discovers that fairies are real.

It is a combination of sci-fi, young adult, adventure, fantasy fiction, and coming-of-age genres. No matter what your age is, this book and series will enrapture you.

Additionally, this is also a great starter series for kids and teens who don’t like to read.

SCIENCE AND FICTION ARTEMIS FOWL REVIEW

There are elements of technology such as aircrafts and weaponry as well as fairy-tale references. Indeed, you will find comments about the type of weapons that Butler carries. There are mythical allusions for all different species of fairy, such as goblins, pixies, and more.

History and cultural are also recuring themes throughout the short book. The first chapter references Ho Chi Minh City. There are lines about the history, the food, clothing, and more.

There are many references to pop-culture and world news. Disneyland and cultural elements of different countries are mentioned often. This book is great for actually teaching young kids and teens about the world.

Eoin Colfer

Colfer does an excellent job of incorporating the food, outfits, and history of various countries, without teaching any of this in a boring way that would turn away a young or new reader.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

The characters are interesting and show growth, even within the first book

The main characters include Artemis, Butler, Juliette, Holly Short, Commander Root, and Foley. Although I wont give you spoilers, I will tell you a little about how the title character transform throughout the novel.

Artemis starts off as a selfish boy genius who thinks he is better than everyone else. He is rich, but wants to grow his wealth at any means necessary. By the end of the book, he is a little more compassionate. Also, we learn throughout the book that he is not as selfish as he seems at the beginning. Indeed, he cares deeply for his family and close friends.

VILLAIN? OR MISUNDERSTOOD...?

The main character, Artemis Fowl Jr, is a young and complex character. He is, for all intents and purposes, the villain.

Without giving away too many spoilers, I will say that he commits criminal acts throughout the book (and series). His actions are harmful to others, though he does not hurt anyone on purpose.

He is very goal-oriented and is willing to do just about anything to accomplish what he wants. Contrarily, his goals are not entirely selfish. He loves his family and tries very hard to give them the best life.

RELATABLE ARTEMIS FOWL REVIEW

Despite his criminal status, Artemis is a main character that many people, young and old, can relate to.

I highly recommend this series to all young non-readers who need a little push into the world of words and pages.
