COURT OF BLOOD AND BINDINGS FAE FANTASY BOOK REVIEW

A SPICY FAE ADVENTURE NOVEL

This Court of Blood and Bindings fae fantasy book review will tell you what this book is about, characters you will love, quotes that will stick with you for ages, where you can buy this for yourself…and more!

This is the first book in the Fae Isles series by Lisette Marshall. It follows Emeline, a young woman with colour magic, similar to what the powerful and evil Fae have. She is looked down upon by everyone in her town, even her parents. One day, when the Silent Death arrives, her entire life, and everything she thought she knew about the world, flips upside down.

This book is a fae fantasy story with spicy adult scenes. Click HERE to get it on Amazon today!

The Silent Death destroyed her village and took her captive. Now, Emeline must do everything she can to survive. She has a lot of power, but no knowledge on how to properly use it. So, she must rely on her instincts and wit to get her out of dangerous situations in the Crimson Court with winged creatures who are must older, more powerful, and smarter than she is.

Lucky for her, the Silent Death isn’t what he seems…

Extremely powerful? Yes.

Dark and brooding? Yes.

But his end goal is not to control all humans, rather, he has been fighting for nearly 150 years to overthrow Mother from inside her own court. Their freedom depends on them getting along, which is an almost impossible task. Trusting each other proves even harder, especially when Emeline can’t even trust herself and her attraction to him.

He is a sexy, powerful, morally grey Fae warrior, after all…

QUOTES

EMELINE

“When sleep finally found me, I dreamt of swooshing velvet wings and dark eyes so bottomless they might lead straight to hell.”

EMELINE

“Then velvety wings swept out around me, and with three majestic strokes, we shot towards the smoke-stained heaven, leaving the sizzling, smouldering ruins of my life behind.

Into the night.

Into a nightmare.”

EMELINE

“I knew my place. It was located somewhere among the ranks of the perpetually stupid and the unreasonably stubborn.

COURT OF BLOOD AND BINDINGS FAE FANTASY BOOK REVIEW

5/5

Yes, you see the correct number of stars – 5! This is one of the best books that I have read in a very long time. The balance between romance, adventure, and character growth is PERFECT. There isn’t TOO MUCH of any one literary element, making this a perfectly balanced novel.

The characters are interesting, relatable, and often surprising. Although you do get some Sarah J. Maas vibes reading this story, it is 100% original. The familiar fae traits, morally grey love interest, and strong female lead are my favorite things about this book.

THE CHARACTERS

The only two characters in this book that I truly do not like are Emeline’s parents, but I suppose that was the author’s intention. All of the characters in this book are either relatable or interesting or both! You will want to keep reading just to see more of what they do.

Personally, Thysandra is my favorite, and I am hoping to see more of her in the rest of the series.

THE PLOT

Are you one of those readers that gets a little bit of anxiety when you go to start a new book? Although I love reading, my books tend to be fae/fantasy and vampire/werewolf themed. Those books are familiar to me, and any deviation from my literary comfort zone makes me just a tiny bit anxious. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be hard to find an epic series that is original, but also familiar.

This book is EXACTLY what all fantasy lovers need on their shelves. The characteristics of the Fae, the morally grey love interest, and the evolution of the main female character from plain to badass are familiar and comforting concepts, but they are told in a completely original way.

My one and only criticism is that this 369-page novel is not enough! Thankfully, there are two more books in this series!

THE WRITING

Court of Blood and Bindings is written from 1st person point of view of the main character, Emeline.

The writing is easy to follow, but you can tell that the author, Lisette Marshall, is a well-read book lover with a strong grasp of English grammar and vocabulary. The main character is twenty years old and anyone between the ages of 15 to 50 will agree that the flow of the writing is smooth. There are no moments where a small leap in time seemed random nor were there chapters that did not seamlessly flow together.

Most impressive of all is that morally grey love interest, Creon. Through magical circumstances, he is mute, but that doesn’t at all detract from his complicated personality. The author very carefully describes Creon’s body movements, facial expressions, and actions in a way that lets us understand him.

THE RE-READABILITY

Not only will I be re-reading this book ASAP, but I am also going to buy the rest of the series (in paperback) and probably all of the other books that Lisette Marshall has written. I haven’t been this excited by an author and ALL of their published works since Sarah J. Maas rocked the book-lovers community.

Have you ever re-read a book and noticed things the second time that you didn’t see the first time that you read it? Well, I am very excited to discover all of the hints and foreshadowing that I probably missed the first time.

WHY IS THIS NOT ALREADY A MOVIE?

Not to be dramatic, but it really hurts my heart that Court of Blood and Bindings is not already a movie series. I can imagine the colour magic will really pop on big screens. The completely average-looking female lead growing into the badass that saves all of the fae and humankind is a character that we all want to see and relate to!
