The third chapter of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone is when Harry’s life really begins to change. He gets his first mysterious Hogwarts acceptance letter.
It is a mysterious letter because it is addressed to Harry’s EXACT location. not just the street he lives on, or the house he lives in, but WHERE HE SLEEPS.
Another interesting feature of this letter is that it wasn’t written on any old white envelope. This letter came in an envelope that was thick and made of classic yellowing parchment paper. The ink used to write the address is not from an ordinary pen, it is scripted in an emerald-green color.

Magic… or stalking? Somehow, Hogwarts knew that Harry’s uncle was trying to beat the system. That’s why he moved Harry into Dudley’s second room.
But, let’s be honest, Vernon doesn’t stand a chance against the impressive Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or against Dumbledore.
Despite moving to a new bedroom, and finally getting out from under the stairs, Harrys Hogwarts Acceptance Letter still found him.

Vernon finally cracked…
After receiving HUNDREDS of letters, Vernon decided that enough was enough. In The Sorcerer’s Stone book, Vernon tells the whole family to pack a bag. He then drives A LOT until they finally end up in a hotel.
Vernon thinks he is safe… he’s not.
The front desk receptionist brings Vernon and the family a letter addressed to Harry at the hotel.
It’s almost as if Dumbledore knew where Vernon was going before he had even decided it for himself.

It is delivered by the ever-lovable Hagrid to the broken-down tower on an island in the middle of the ocean during a storm.
…Vernon was really trying hard to hide Harry from the truth, and his fate of being an incredible wizard.

It contains your new Nimbus Two Thousand, but I don’t want everybody knowing you’ve got a broomstick or they’ll all want one. Oliver Wood will meet you tonight on the Quidditch field at seven o’clock for your first training session.
Professor M. McGonagall
The Sorcerer’s Stone book and movie portray this scene a little differently.
In the book, Professor McGonagall gives Harry his Nimbus 3000 and a letter telling him to NOT open it in front of all the kids.
In the movie, Harry’s new gift was made to be very obvious.
Harry’s owl, Hedwig, brings the Nimbus 3000 right into the dining hall and drops it directly on the table. It is wrapped very badly, so everyone can obviously see that it’s a brand-new broom.
Harry looks across the hall at Dumbledore in astonishment, and the silly old Professors winks. It seems as though Dumbledore is behind Harry’s new gift.
