HOW MY MOM STARTED IT ALL
My mom always had a Stephen King book in her hand, but my only books were from a Disney subscription. When I started school and was able to go the library, though, I discovered Nancy Drew. No longer stuck reading about Pooh and Tigger, I devoured the whole Nancy Drew series within two years. The stories were tame, but always had a spooky element that I loved. I guess this is the same theme that hooked me on Scooby Doo early in life, as well. I moved on to devouring every book about hauntings I could find in the school library, but in third grade I found Dean Koontz.
THE FIRST BOOK
My first adult horror novel, at the age of 9, was Phantoms by Dean Koontz. I “borrowed” it from my grandmother, who was getting ready to read it when she found it gone. I did return it, and rather than getting into trouble, my grandmother started letting me borrow her other Koontz books. Soon, it became a tradition for her to give me a new hardback Koontz book for every birthday and Christmas until she passed away in 2008. I have been reading horror ever since. I do branch out, I will read books from any genre, but my true love is horror. Along with my book travels, I have become involved with the Indie Horror community. A bunch of amazing and caring individuals who write some of the best books I have ever read but are not promoted as well because they are not with big publishers. They may be with a small publishing house or self-publish their own books, and I felt inclined to help with their book promotion as much as possible. Thus began The Bookish Abyss. Started just this last May on Instagram only, I did not realize it would grow from just a handful of people to over 5,000 in just a few months. So, The Bookish Abyss is branching out and so happy to be part of Books 4 Movies.
MORE ABOUT ME
Is there life outside books? Yes, there is. I am also a single mom of four kids. Two adults and two school agers. My 18-year-old has just started service in the US Army. I am a special education teacher by day. I love to travel and check out places from books and movies. My kids and I have been to Santa Cruz to visit some of the locations from The Lost Boys (RIP Corey Haim), and I finally got to check the Devil’s Tower off my bucket list. I’ve been wanting to see it in person since I was 4. I was so overwhelmed, I had tears, seriously. I’ve been to The Goonie’s House, the school from Kindergarten Cop (which is just down the street from The Goonie’s House), and, yes, I did the Twilight Tour up in Forks, WA. I’m not ashamed to admit I love the books. Now, if I could only find that wardrobe to Narnia…Other interests include concerts, an unhealthy addiction to reality ghost shows, horror movies of the haunting variety, camping, and hanging out with my kids. Oh, and baseball. I absolutely adore baseball.
