TOP 4 ZOMBIE BOOKS To Read This Halloween

THE BEST ZOMBIE BOOKS TO KEEP YOU UP AT NIGHT

These Top 4 Zombie Books to read this Halloween are sure to give you dreams of blood and brains!

Some people find the undead to be a little too disturbing, while others think that eating brains and flesh is fascinating. Which one are you?

WHAT MAKES A GOOD ZOMBIE BOOK?

Let’s start with what characterizes a zombie…

Rotting, undead, and hungry are a few traits that zombies in books and movies often share. They tend to either have super strength and/or speed or are very slow and weak. More often than not, a zombie’s #1 weakness is the brain. It might be a death blow to their own brain or using a living being’s brain as bait.

What makes a good Zombie book?

The book should contain a touch of human emotion and connection. It’s not enough to just have a zombie running around eating people, there needs to be a reason WHY there are zombies and how their existence impacts the living on an emotional level.

The zombies should have strengths and weaknesses. However, their strengths shouldn’t be so amazing that humans have no chance of survival. On the other side of that, their weakness can’t be easy and obvious – otherwise, the humans would easily win and the story will fall short.

WORLD WAR Z

World War Z is perhaps one of the most iconic zombie books ever written. It is also a movie!

This book is unlike many others because it is told as a history, not a current event. The main character, Max Brooks, travels across America to interview people regarding their experiences during the zombie war.

As readers, we travel with Max Brooks as he talks to men, women, and children throughout the country and sees the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. We also experience the various stories and POVs of the horrifying events that occurred DURING the war.

” The monsters that rose from the dead, they are nothing compared to the ones we carry in our hearts.”

Slow Burn, by Bobby Adair is an indie book that readers rave about.

As a deadly flu strain rages across Africa, Asia, and Europe, the main character, Zed, is more concerned with paying rent than with the rest of the world’s problems. But when the virus enters his own home, he is suddenly more focused on surviving, and the phrase “kill or be killed” becomes very real.  After being bitten by his own father, who was a zombie, Zed begins to exhibit some undead traits. However, he does not turn into a full-fledged undead creature. He goes through a “slow burn”.

Zed teams up with another kid at the University, Jerome. Together, they avoid the zombies, stock up on ammunition, attempt to fit into other groups of humans fighting back, and…well, they try to survive.

The Coffee Killer, by A.R. Shaw takes place in a cozy motel in the middle of nowhere in a post-apocalyptic world.

One day, a body turns up dead. The manager and housekeeper, Darrell and Nance, hide the body while they search for the killer. One day, two mysterious men come to ask questions and the dead body is suddenly replaced with a new corpse.

This is a fun and short read, unlike any other apocalyptic novel you’ve read!

M.R. Carey brings The Girl With All The Gifts, a heart-wrenching post-apocalyptic zombie story that follows the point of view of 5 different characters.

A young girl, Melanie, is one of the main characters. She lives on a military base with other children who have all been infected with a deadly virus. These children go to school and have play time, but the normalcy stops there. They are kept in cells and often experimented on by scientists hoping to find a cure.

A creepy and original story loosely based on a real virus found in insects several years ago.

“The truth is the truth, the only prize worth having. If you deny it, you’re only showing that you’re unworthy of it.”

Fictional stories about deadly viruses spreading throughout the world and altering people’s DNAs are now more relatable than ever before. Because of the relatable content, they are now even more creepy.

Have you read any zombie books lately and felt a little too connected to the main character? Do you see the characters stocking up on supplies and ammunition and think to yourself “maybe that’s what I should do too… just in case?”. You’re not alone!
